UK ring size chart with international conversions

UK and Irish ring sizes run in letters from A to Z (then Z+1 to Z+6), while the USA and Canada use numbers, and French, German, Japanese and Swiss sizes use their own scales. The chart below converts ring size letters to numbers and back, alongside the inside diameter and circumference in millimetres and inches for every size.

How to measure your ring size at home

You only need a strip of paper and a ruler — or a ring that already fits. For the most accurate result, use our ring sizer, which works just like the ones jewellers use.

Method 1: Measure your finger with paper or string

Cut a narrow strip of paper (or a piece of string) and wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you'll wear the ring on. If your knuckle is noticeably larger, measure around the knuckle too and pick a size in between.
Mark the exact point where the end overlaps with a fine pen.
Measure from the end of the strip to your mark in millimetres. This is your finger's circumference.

Method 2: Measure a ring that already fits

Choose a ring that fits the right finger comfortably.
Measure across the widest part of the inside of the band, from inner edge to inner edge, in millimetres. This is the inside diameter.
Enter it into the calculator (set to inside diameter, mm) to get your UK size.

Tips for an accurate measurement

Measure at the end of the day — fingers are smallest in the cold morning and largest in the evening.
Don't measure when your hands are very cold or very warm.
Measure two or three times and take the most consistent result.
If you're between sizes, choose the larger one.
For wide bands (6mm and over), consider going up half a size for comfort.
The same finger on your other hand can be up to half a size different — always measure the exact finger you'll wear the ring on.

How do I find out my ring size at home?

Wrap a strip of paper snugly around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in millimetres — that's your circumference. Enter it into our ring size calculator to get your UK size instantly. If you have a ring that already fits, measuring its inside diameter works just as well, and our reusable ring sizer gives a jeweller-accurate result.

What is ring size M in numbers?

A UK ring size M is a US size 6, a French/EU size 52¾ and a Japanese size 12, with an inside diameter of 16.5mm. To convert any other letter to a number, use the calculator or the letters-to-numbers columns in our conversion chart.

How can I find someone's ring size without them knowing?

Borrow a ring they already wear on the correct finger and measure its inside diameter in millimetres, then convert it with our calculator. You can also trace the inside of the ring on paper, or ask their friends or family. If you can't find out, err on the larger side — most rings can be resized down more easily than up, and the average sizes above are a sensible fallback.

What if I'm between two ring sizes?

Choose the larger size — a slightly loose ring is far more comfortable than a tight one, and it still needs to fit over your knuckle. For wide bands (around 6mm and over), we'd also suggest going up half a size, as wider rings fit more snugly.

What are the average ring sizes for women and men in the UK?

Most women in the UK wear between size J and P, with L and M the most common. Most men wear between Q and V, with S and T the most common. These are averages, not guarantees — measuring is always better if you can.

What is the largest ring size?

UK ring sizes run from A up to Z, then continue Z+1 to Z+6. A Z+6 has an inside diameter of about 24.3mm (76.25mm circumference). You'll find each ring's available size range on its product page.

Does temperature affect your ring size?

Yes. Fingers shrink in the cold and swell in warmth, in the evening, after exercise and during pregnancy. Measure at the end of the day when your hands are at a normal temperature, and take two or three measurements for consistency.

What if the ring I ordered doesn't fit?

Don't worry — you can return or exchange it for a different size in line with our returns policy. Note that engraved and personalised rings are made for you, so double-check the size before ordering those.
