Sterling Silver Hoop Earrings - Your Questions Answered

Are your hoops suitable for new earrings? +

We'd recommend waiting until your piercing is fully healed before wearing sterling silver hoops. During the healing period (typically 6–8 weeks for lobe piercings), your piercer will usually advise sticking with the jewellery they fitted, often surgical steel or titanium. This minimises any possible reaction you might have.

Once healed, sterling silver is a great option. Our small sleeper hoops (from 8mm) are especially popular as a first pair after healing - they're lightweight, sit close to the ear, and are comfortable enough to sleep in without snagging.

If you have particularly sensitive skin, it's worth noting that sterling silver contains a small amount of copper (7.5%), which very occasionally causes a reaction. If that's a concern, look for our 9ct gold hoops (including white gold).

Can I get gift wrapping with my earrings? +

Yes - we offer two main levels of gift wrapping. In order to keep costs to you down, most of our earrings come in an envelope as standard. You can see this on the product page.

You can upgrade most earrings to come in a branded giftbox for a small fee.

You can also choose to add a branded giftbag, which comes with a polishing cloth at checkout. These can be combined together (box + giftbag) or used on their own.

Can I wear your hoops in the shower or the swimming pool? +

If they are sterling silver - you can, but you may find they tarnish more quickly. Tarnishing is no bad thing, it can be polished off very easily. Our recommendation is to take sterling silver hoops off before you go in the sea, swimming pool or shower and to minimise their contact with make up and suncream.

For other materials like 9ct Gold (including White and Rose gold), this is much less of an issue as Gold doesn't react with other things as much as silver does.

How are your hoop earrings measured? +

We measure the external diameter of hoops - the distance from one side to the other from outside to outside.

When we describe a hoop as being '10mm' - we mean the external diameter is 10mm. You can check on a ruler or tape measure what that looks like in real life. 10mm = 1cm.

We also provide the width of the metal part of the hoop itself in most cases. Check the 'Specifications' tab on the product page to find this. This tells you how thick the hoops are.

Our size guide on the product pages can give you more information, and show you each hoop size on a real model's ear so you can get a sense of it.

Will your Sterling Silver Hoops tarnish? +

They can yes - this is the nature of sterling silver, however they can easily be polished to remove the tarnish. If a sterling silver product doesn't ever tarnish at all, it probably isn't sterling silver.

Some of our sterling silver items are coated with a Lacquer called 'E-Coat'. This can keep silver looking new for up to 2-5 years. We're working towards applying this to more of our products over time. Please get in touch if you would like to check if the product you're buying does have E-coat on it.

Tarnishing can mean both the jewellery AND your skin can turn black. This does NOT mean there is anything wrong with the jewellery - or your ears! It is simply tarnish - silver being exposed to oxygen in the air. Different skin pH levels can cause tarnishing to occur at different rates - sometimes it can happen in a few days. Suncreams, make-up and lotions can also increase the rate of tarnishing on any sterling silver jewellery.

Note that we are an Assay-Assured jeweller, and all our sterling silver pieces are certified as genuine sterling silver by the Edinburgh Assay Office.

What does Sterling Silver mean? +

Sterling silver is 92.5% silver - it is arguably the best composition of silver for jewellery making because it is a lot more durable and harder than pure silver, which is a very soft metal.

You may see .925 mentioned or stamped on some pieces, this refers to the 92.5% silver in the item.

The remaining 7.5% is usually made up of copper, zinc and other metals.

What does Recycled Metal mean? +

When we say our items are made from Recycled metal, this is metal (Sterling Silver and 9ct Gold) that has been melted down and made into our products. The products themselves have not been worn and are all brand new.

This is more environmentally friendly than mining for new metal and reduces the amount of labour involved in creating our jewellery Not all our products are made from recycled metal yet, but most are. We are working towards increasing this number

How long does shipping take? +

The following times refer to UK shipping:

If you choose next day shipping and order before 4pm Monday To Friday, then you will receive your item the next day.

Tracked 24 usually takes 24-48 hours, Tracked 48 (Free Shipping, when you spend £30) takes 48-72 hours. These are typical estimates.

If you need the item for a wedding or event in a few days, we highly recommend choosing Next Day shipping to avoid disappointment!
