Picking a name for a new baby is a tough decision, but you can find inspiration in the most unusual of places. In fact, some parents are taking inspiration from the fashion they wear, naming their kids after fashion labels, beauty brands and even precious stones.
But what are the most popular ‘fashion’ names? We’ve taken a look at names for baby girls and boys in the UK and US to find out which names inspired by fashion are the most popular.
When it comes to the designers, Armani tops the list with a total of 16,290 babies given the name in the UK and US since 2000.
Also popular are names inspired by precious stones and jewels with Ruby proving most popular with a total of 102,594 UK and US babies from 2000-2018.
Some of the more unusual names include Nivea, Boss, Rimmel and Versace.
The Most Popular Jewel Names for UK Girls
Ruby was by far the most popular jewel name for girls in the UK, with twice as many girls being named this than the next most popular, Amber. Other popular choices include Jade and Pearl, while others have slowly died off over the years, such as Beryl.

For boys in the UK, there are fewer people named after precious stones, however, one which not everyone may know is a stone is Jasper. With over 7,000 boys named after the stone which is known as the “Supreme Nurturer,” Jasper is a stone of grounding and stability, that provides comfort, security, strength and healing.

The most popular name amongst fashion-conscious parents was Chanel, with 1,349 British girls being named after the iconic designer Coco Chanel. Unlike the UK, Jade topped the chart for the most popular jewel names, followed by Ruby and Amber. While Beryl doesn’t make an appearance on the US girls list, Jasper, which is the most popular on the boys list of jewel names, also makes it into the top ten for girls in the US.

Methodology
We used government data from both the UK and the US to find a list of names given to babies registered between 2000-2018. This was data for UK boys and UK girls as well as both boys and girls in the US.
We were then able to compare this with a list of the most popular fashion and beauty brands as well as a list of precious stones to give us the most popular names. We excluded common names that may be associated with brands. For example, while Hugo Boss is one of the brands we looked at, we did not look at the name Hugo as it is a popular name in its own right; rather, we looked at the name Boss which is more commonly associated with the brand.
